Statement on 2022 Midterms

The votes are in for Harford County and we want to take a moment to celebrate the diversity that this election gave us. We saw an impressive number of people of color and women running in our county and our state, a trend we hope continues to grow.

We want to especially recognize our Harford County candidates of color for state offices: ANDRE JOHNSON, who won his race, MEDFORD CAMPBELL III, and GILLIAN MILLER. Local office races saw women and people of color running throughout the county as well, and we thank each of them for their incredible efforts.

The election also represented some historic firsts for our state. Wes Moore will become the state’s first and the nation’s third Black governor. We will have our first immigrant and Asian American lieutenant governor in Aruna Miller. Anthony Brown becomes our first Black attorney general and Brooke Lierman will be the first female comptroller and the first woman directly elected to a statewide office.

The work to increase diversity in our candidates and elected officials will continue, but we think this quote from Wes Moore's press conference says it all: “I might be the first person across this bridge, I also just know that I’m not crossing alone and I’m very, very cognizant of the shoulders I’m standing on.”
