The Harford County NAACP is exited to announce that the winner of the $1000 Corneilius Wiley Scott III NAACP Community Service Scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year is Samantha King.

Ms. King is a student at Harford Community College and will graduate next semester with a goal of transferring to the University of Maryland to complete a BA in International Relations.

While still an undergraduate, Ms. King, who lives in Edgewood, has already had extensive international experience, including winning a Benjamin Gilman award to study Arabic for a summer in Fez, Morocco in 2015. This August, she will be going to Pristina, Kosovo for a two-week conference on international relations hosted by the Kosovo Center of Diplomacy.

Ms. King states: “I have had a particular interest in the Middle East since growing up post-9/11. During my junior year in High school, I was an exchange student in Gross-Gerau, Germany. When I graduated, I did a gap year in Poza Rica, Mexico where I taught ESL at a small language school and Pemco, the state oil company. I still keep in touch with most of my students. It was when I came home that I realized I wanted to work at the State Department. I am leaning toward public diplomacy for my career track.”

The Corneilius Wiley Scott III NAACP Community Service Scholarship is awarded annually to a Harford Community College student. It was established in memory of Corneilius Wiley Scott III, an African-American leader in Harford County who recognized the need to mobilize African-Americans to become more involved in the political process. Mr. Scott was a trailblazer. In 20008 he founded the African-American Democrats of Harford County, and he was the Youth Advisor for the local Youth Chapter of the NAACP. His belief in the power of young African-Americans to impact politics for the greater good is celebrated with this scholarship.
